Laylatul Miraj (The Night of Ascension)

As we are now experiencing the 3 sacred months, many holy nights are approaching. Last week we celebrated the Laylatul Miraj & Israa the ascension of our beloved Prophet Muhammad pbuH to Masjid Al-Aqsa and then to the heaven. Our year 6 to 12 Girls fasted on that day and enjoyed the spiritual night with making duas and prayers to all humanity and had fun sitting all together for iftar dinner.

MUSIC

While teaching a grade two class today, I found that quite a few students asked me for harder work. I explained earlier this term that, they can choose to try harder work if they can prove to me the work I given them is too easy. I quickly tested these student's abilities to play the piece and I could see that many of these students could play the piece with ease, so I challenged these students to grade 3/4 level and to my surprise and amazement some of these grade two students could play the grade 4 level with the correct fingers and without any assistance from me by simply reading the music. Only one of these students actually has had private keyboard lessons that I know of.

These are the movements I get a real warm feeling inside, Mr Webb

Did you know that you may be able to install a virtual piano on your computer, laptop or iPad?

Athletics

This year's house athletics was definitely underway. A few nerves crept in and were quickly quashed as their owners stepped up to take their turn. Small rivalries were beginning to grow as each event drew to a close and the ribbons were starting to be handed out. Some were fortunate enough to add to a stash of ribbons and others their very first. As the events rolled on, house points grew in their number and eventually a winning house was decided.

Camp Quality Incursion

On Thursday 21st April we were entertained by "Camp Quality Education Program" which educates children about cancer in a light hearted way. Children learned types of cancer, treatments and the side effects of treatment. The puppet show presented the thoughts and feelings of a child cancer sufferer in an informative and compassionate way. Their slogan is "laughter is the best medicine" – the puppet show certainly made us all laugh!

Gallipoli Youth Cup

On Monday 18th April 2016 Grade 6 visited Melbourne Park Tennis Centre to the Gallipoli Youth Cup.

We were able to practice our own tennis skills on their training courts and we were lucky enough to watch the Australian professional tennis player, Thanasi Kokkinakis train.

In the afternoon we were taken on a really interesting tour of the Rod Laver arena. We looked at the press room, physio room and the changing rooms.

All of Grade 6 had a super day!

The students were very excited to help out others in need and joined in all events just to raise money. Some of the activities that we took part in were Cake Stalls, Movie at Lunch, Crazy Hair Day and more.

At the end of last term, the Year 6 school leaders presented a cheque worth $2100 and they were very proud of their hard efforts.

Thank you again to all parents, families, students and staff who contributed, as every dollar can make a difference.

Mother's Day Share a Book

For Mother's Day our students had the opportunity to share a book with their mother, aunts, grandmothers, sisters and other important women in their life.

It was wonderful to see the students and their mums spend a special moment together and even more nice to see our older students take part in listening to younger students whose loved one could not make it to school.

Thank you to everyone who was able to come in and share a book with their child.

Secondary News

Secondary girl's music club

The secondary music elective is going very well. We learned how to improvise last term and began to read music. This term we are focusing on playing chords on the keyboard and reading more complex music. The four chords we are learning and in hundreds of songs. Once these girls have mastered these chords they could potentially play many songs or make their own music with these chords.

Besides the mandatory performance and theory they are given, some girls have chosen additional songs to try to learn on their own accord. We decided to open a music club just for secondary girls to give these girls and any other secondary girl a chance to come and learn an instrument on Wednesdays 1st half of lunch The secondary girl's music club is free and there are no obligations. The instruments we have available are guitars, keyboards, piano and drums. The girls are also free to sing too.

I hope to see even more girls come to this club in the future, Mr Webb.

Year 9/10 Science Challenge

The students of 9/10G are undertaking a study in comparative biology as part of their negotiated curriculum during Term 2.

In their study of living things, the girls are dissecting fish and large worms. They are recording their observations and making comparisons between the anatomy of fish, worms and humans.

In their dissection of the fish, the students were surprised to discover that fish, too, have livers and kidneys!

The students also dissected out the fish gills and have saw how very different fish organ for breathing is from human lungs. One body part none of the students had seen, nor even heard of before was the fish's large swim bladder. This organ helps fish move up and down in water. The girls are confident they are not going to find one in a worm!
